Our Story

We Learn Naturally

We Learn Naturally was founded in 2014. It is an inclusive space where families can explore concepts pertaining to self-directed education (SDE). It is the umbrella organization that supports SDE learning through a variety of ways including recreational programs and local events. We Learn Naturally supports efforts to empower learners to discover the world and their fit in it with curiosity and enthusiasm.

Learning in the Woods

Learning in the Woods was our first program and it runs successfully today under the thoughtful direction of Tanya Collins Appleton. Learning in the Woods offers a taste of what self-directed education is like through recreational programs, summer camps, PA Day camps, special events, and workshops for learners of all ages.

The Barn School

The Barn School is situated in North Burlington in a brand new facility, shaped like a modern barn. We offer classes, camps, workshops, and events that embrace self-directed education and non-violent communication. We are dedicated to fostering a loving, respectful community of participants who are dedicated to exploring the joys and curiosities of leading a self-directed life in a culture that often promotes the opposite.

Our growing community of families include unschoolers, homeschoolers, and public/private schoolers who use us outside of traditional school hours. It is our hope that through our living example, we can expand the concept of education to be more inclusive, meaningful, and relevant for the 21st Century.
